Gps Alerted To Medicare Phone Scam

HUNTER GPs are being singled out by phone scammers who may be after the means to prescribe drugs and defraud Medicare.

A practice reported to the Hunter Urban Division of General Practice a suspected fraudulent call from someone claiming to be from Telstra.

The Health Insurance Commission has warned doctors against giving information to organisations they do not know.

The division said the caller claimed to be from Telstra and tried to get the practice's provider and prescriber numbers.

The caller told the Hunter practice they needed the provider and prescriber numbers because they were applying again for a broadband subsidy on the practice's behalf.
